Start PRINCE is a study by the School of Nursing and Midwifery in NUI, Galway looking at the impact of a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programme for people with breathing problems in Primary Care in Ireland.

Information for Participants

What are we doing?

We are undertaking a study supported by the Health Research Board that looks at the impact of Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programmes. Such programmes are aimed at improving the care of people with breathing problems, and we want to see if it is feasible to run these in your local community.

Why are we contacting you?

We are contacting you to ask if you wish to be involved in this study. There will be an initial 30 minute appointment at your local GP practice to test your breathing.

What will my participation entail?

If you are eligible for the study we will then invite you for a health assessment on your exercise ability. This will take 1 hour, and will be in a venue in your local community.

Some people who attend the health assessment will be invited to an 8 week pulmonary rehabilitation programme (2 hours per week) in their local community at no cost to you. This will involve receiving information on managing your breathlessness, your medication, exercise, relaxation, and important information about keeping well from the practice nurse in your GP practice in addition to receiving a structured exercise programme with a physiotherapist, tailored to your needs. When the programme is finished, we will ask you to come again for further follow-up assessments and some participants will be asked to be involved in a follow-up interviews.

Who Do I contact to find out more?
